Diana Memorial Playground, Kensington, London
Next to Kensington Palace, the former home of Diana Princess of Wales, is a fabulous children's playground for kids up to 12 years old. It's dominated by a giant pirate ship which children can climb all over, but there's also a sensory trail, areas for climbing and exploring as well as swings and slides. Staff are on site at all times, and no adults can enter without children. If you stay for a while, there is a café and toilets on site.
National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London
The NMM’s new gallery is especially for babies and young children and it’s all about fun. Ahoy! features many different play zones including a beach and a ship deck, plus a game firing cannons and another that is a bit like Air Hockey. The fish shop is wonderful – rows of pretend fish, cash tills and shopping baskets. There’s also the All Hands exploration gallery for ages 6-12.
Mudchute Farm, Isle of Dogs, London
An unexpected patch of countryside on the Isle of Dogs, Mudchute Park and Farm is a laidback and friendly day out, with the chance to get close to all kinds of animals. Join the regular crafting workshops and feed the beasts (the cows particularly love elderflowers), then feed your own little ones at the Mudchute Kitchen.
Corams Fields, Bloomsbury, London
A fantastic free playground with something for children of all ages tucked away between Kings Cross and Holborn. Their children’s centre runs a range of free drop-in activity sessions for under 5s during term time and there is a small farm area with animals and birds as well as an outdoor café.
Olympic Park, Stratford, London
With oodles of traffic-free pathways, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is a brilliant place for running around and bike rides. The Tumbling Bay adventure playground is a real highlight, with sand pits, wobbly bridges, rock pools and tall treehouses. There are also swings and slides.
