The perfect guide to a toddler’s day out in Edinburgh

2 September 2019

There is no shortage of fun activities and events to keep the kids amused on a family day out to Scotland’s capital. If you plan on visiting Edinburgh with kids or toddlers, we have great ideas to make your visit exciting for the whole family.

Tour the Edinburgh Castle

A visit to the Edinburgh Castle is a must when in Edinburgh. Join a tour or stroll through the castle at your own pace. Kids will love seeing the Crown Jewels, the Great Hall, Mons Meg, and the views of the city.

National Museum of Scotland

As well as fascinating exhibits about ancient Egypt, ancient Scotland, Natural History, and Science and Technology, there are some inspired interactive activities. Children can dig for dinosaur bones, get behind the wheel of a Formula 1 race car, try out a miniature trebuchet, or dress up in the traditional costumes of different cultures.

George City Farm

Open since 1982, this venue has two key selling points. For older children it can be an educational experience as it’s an urban farm with chickens, cows, goats, pigs and sheep. And if you want to entertain younger kids, there are accessible pet lodge animals, from the challenging (a snake called Dougal) to the cuddly (hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits).

Enjoy a Mini Harry Potter Tour of Edinburgh

Author of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, lived in Edinburgh at the time of writing the first book. With its medieval alleyways called “closes” and tall narrow buildings with turrets and of course the Castle overlooking the city, you do feel like you are stepping into another world when you visit Edinburgh.

The Museum of Childhood

Situated on the famous Royal Mile, this is the first museum in the world dedicated to the history of childhood. The Museum of Childhood has 21 rooms containing more than 2,000 toys and games from days-gone-by. From early Steiff Bears and Corgi cars to 1980’s Barbie dolls, this is a beautiful collection and a lovely way to spend the afternoon.
